Ekklesia 521 is the high school ministry of Beautiful Church, located in the suburbs of Rowland Heights.
The name Ekklesia 521 is derived from two separate elements: first, Ekklesia represents the Greek word for “church” and second, 521 represents the Bible verse 2nd Corinthians 5:21 which reads, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
This verse is one of the most concise and powerful expressions of the Gospel (“The Good News”) that is found in the Bible because it describes the greatest exchange that could have ever happened in history where our sin was placed on Jesus and in return, out of the goodness and mercy of God, Jesus’ righteousness was put on us.
This is not only “Good News,” this is the greatest news because it means that we can all stop trying to be holy and earn our way into Heaven, but rather rest in the fact that Jesus accomplished forever what we could not accomplish ourselves.
So in essence, the name stands for the idea that Ekklesia 521 is striving to be a church that is centered around the Gospel in all aspects of life.
Ekklesia521 exists to show off God’s glorious grace in all areas of our lives (Eph 1:5-6; 1 Cor. 10:31).
Our vision for everybody involved in Ekklesia521 is that we become a people who embrace and live out our core values.
Truth (John 14:6; 8:32)
Community (Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:24-25)
Dependence on the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:6-7)
The Ekklesia 521 ministry team operates under several convictions, some of which include the following:
(1) Directing students’ attention away from us (the ministry team) and onto the Ultimate Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who will never fail them.
(2) Clearly distinguishing to students the difference between religion and the Gospel. Religion says that “If you want God to love you and give you grace, then you must obey.” But the Gospel of Jesus Christ says that “Because God has already demonstrated His love for you and gave you grace, therefore obey.
(3) Understanding that we (along with parents) are not the ones who are ultimately responsible for regenerating students. Our responsibility is to love them, pray for them, teach them, train them, preach to them the same Gospel that saved us, but as 1 Peter 1:3 says, it is ultimately the Holy Spirit that brings them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
The ministry team consists of adult staff and volunteers who strive to be warm and welcoming to all who make their way through our doors. We seek to provide a safe environment for students to truly be themselves.
These volunteers are primarily responsible for exemplifying Gospel-centered lives for students by leading weekly community groups during the school year, mentoring, and teaching.
